It was produced and distributed internationally by Esperanto Filmoj and Warner Bros. Pictures , in association with Telecinco Cinema.
Pan's Labyrinth opened to widespread critical acclaim, with many praising the visual effects, direction, cinematography and performances. A novelization by del Toro and Cornelia Funke was published in In a fairy tale , Princess Moanna, whose father is the king of the underworld , visits the human world, where the sunlight blinds her and erases her memory.
She becomes mortal and eventually dies. The king believes that eventually, her spirit will return to the underworld, so he builds labyrinths which act as portals around the world in preparation for her return.
In Francoist Spain , ten-year-old Ofelia travels with her pregnant but sickly mother Carmen to meet Captain Vidal, her new stepfather.
Vidal, the son of a famed commander who died in Morocco , believes strongly in Falangism and has been assigned to hunt down republican rebels.
A large stick insect, which Ofelia believes to be a fairy, leads Ofelia into an ancient stone labyrinth , but she is stopped by Vidal's housekeeper Mercedes, who is secretly supporting her brother Pedro and other rebels.
That night, the insect appears in Ofelia's bedroom, where it transforms into a fairy and leads her through the labyrinth.
There, she meets a faun , who believes she is the reincarnation of Princess Moanna. He gives her a book and tells her she will find in it three tasks to complete in order for her to acquire immortality and return to her kingdom.
Ofelia completes the first task — retrieving a key from the belly of a giant toad — but becomes worried about her mother, whose condition is worsening.
The faun gives Ofelia a mandrake root , instructing her to keep it under Carmen's bed in a bowl of milk and regularly supply it with blood, which seems to ease Carmen's illness.
Accompanied by three fairy guides and equipped with a piece of magic chalk, Ofelia then completes the second task — retrieving a dagger from the lair of the terrifying Pale Man, a child-eating monster.
Although warned not to consume anything there, she eats two grapes, awakening the Pale Man. He devours two of the fairies and chases Ofelia, but she manages to escape.
Infuriated at her disobedience, the faun refuses to give Ofelia the third task. During this time, Ofelia quickly becomes aware of Vidal's ruthlessness in the course of hunting down the rebels.
After he erroneously murders two local farmers detained on suspicion of aiding the rebels, Vidal interrogates and tortures a captive rebel.
He asks Doctor Ferreiro to tend to the captive, whom Ferreiro then euthanizes at the rebel's own urging. Realising that Ferreiro is a rebel collaborator, Vidal kills him.
Vidal later catches Ofelia tending to the mandrake root, which he considers delusional. Carmen agrees and throws the root into the fire.
She immediately develops painful contractions and dies giving birth to Vidal's son. Mercedes, having been discovered to be a spy, tries to escape with Ofelia, but they are caught.
Ofelia, mistaken as a traitor, is locked in her bedroom, while Mercedes is taken to be interrogated and tortured. Mercedes frees herself, stabs Vidal, and rejoins the rebels.
The faun, having changed his mind about giving Ofelia a chance to perform the third task, returns and tells her to bring her newborn brother into the labyrinth to complete it.
Ofelia successfully retrieves the baby and flees into the labyrinth. Vidal pursues her as the rebels launch an attack on the outpost.
Ofelia meets the faun at the centre of the labyrinth. The faun suggests drawing a small amount of the baby's blood, as completing the third task and opening the portal to the underworld requires the blood of an innocent, but Ofelia refuses to harm her brother.
Vidal finds her talking to the faun, whom he cannot see. The faun leaves, and Vidal takes the baby from Ofelia's arms before shooting her.
Vidal returns to the labyrinth's entrance, where he is surrounded by rebels, including Mercedes and Pedro. Knowing that he will be killed, he hands the baby to Mercedes and asks that she tell his son the exact time of his death.
Mercedes refuses, telling him that his son will not even know his name. Pedro then shoots Vidal dead. Mercedes enters the labyrinth and comforts a motionless but breathing Ofelia.
Drops of Ofelia's blood fall down the centre of the spiral stone staircase onto an altar. Ofelia, well dressed and uninjured, then appears in a golden throne room.
The King of the underworld tells her that, by choosing to spill her own blood rather than that of an innocent, she passed the final test.
The faun praises Ofelia for her choice, addressing her once more as "Your Highness. Back in the stone labyrinth, Ofelia smiles as she dies peacefully in Mercedes' arms.
The epilogue completes the tale of Princess Moanna, stating that she returned to the Underworld, ruled wisely for many centuries, and left quiet traces of her time in the human realm "visible only to those who know where to look.
The idea for Pan's Labyrinth came from Guillermo del Toro 's notebooks, which he says are filled with "doodles, ideas, drawings and plot bits".
He had been keeping these notebooks for twenty years. At one point during production, he left the notebook in a taxi in London and was distraught, but the cabbie returned it to him two days later.
Lopez said that "for two hours and a half he explained to me all the movie, but with all the details, it was incredible, and when he finished I said, 'You have a script?
In his little head he had all the history with a lot of little detail, a lot of characters, like now when you look at the movie, it was exactly what he had in his head".
Del Toro got the idea of the faun from childhood experiences with " lucid dreaming ". He stated on The Charlie Rose Show that every midnight, he would wake up, and a faun would gradually step out from behind the grandfather's clock.
But in the end, the faun was altered into a goat-faced creature almost completely made out of earth, moss, vines, and tree bark.
He became a mysterious, semi-suspicious relic who gave both the impression of trustworthiness and many signs that warn someone to never confide in him at all.
Del Toro has said the film has strong connections in theme to The Devil's Backbone and should be seen as an informal sequel dealing with some of the issues raised there.
In , del Toro said: " Pan is an original story. Some of my favourite writers Borges, Blackwood, Machen, Dunsany have explored the figure of the god Pan and the symbol of the labyrinth.
These are things that I find very compelling and I am trying to mix them and play with them. Del Toro wanted to include a fairy tale about a dragon for Ofelia to narrate to her unborn brother.
The tale involved the dragon, named Varanium Silex, who guarded a mountain surrounded by thorns, but at its peak is a blue rose that can grant immortality.
The dragon and the thorns ward off many men though, who decide it is better to avoid pain than to be given immortality.
Although the scene was thematically important, it was cut short for budget reasons. There are differing ideas about the film's religious influences.
Del Toro's explanation is "once a Catholic, always a Catholic," however he also admits that the Pale Man's preference for children rather than the feast in front of him is intended as a criticism of the Catholic Church.
In regards to whether or not the fantasy underworld was real or a product of Ofelia's imagination, del Toro stated in an interview that, while he believes it is real, the movie "should tell something different to everyone.
It should be a matter of personal discussion". He then mentioned there were several clues in the movie indicating the underworld was indeed real.
Guillermo Navarro , the director of photography , said that "after doing work in Hollywood on other movies and with other directors, working in our original language in different scenery brings me back to the original reasons I wanted to make movies, which is basically to tell stories with complete freedom and to let the visuals really contribute to the telling of the story".
The pale man's eyes on his hands is a feature shared by the Japanese mythological monster the Tenome a name which means "hand eyes".
Pan's Labyrinth employs some computer-generated imagery in its effects, but mostly uses complex make-up and animatronics.
The giant toad was inspired by The Maze. Del Toro himself performed the noises. The mandrake root is a combination of animatronics and CGI.
Del Toro wanted the fairies "to look like little monkeys, like dirty fairies", but the animation company had the idea to give them wings made of leaves.
The last piece to be applied was the pair of horns, which weighed ten pounds and were extremely tiring to wear. His lower leg was eventually digitally erased in post production.
Del Toro told Jones to "go rock star But less David Bowie , more Mick Jagger ". The Captain's room, as shown in the scene where Captain Vidal is shaving, is supposed to resemble his father's watch, which del Toro says represents his troubled mind.
A bout of weight loss on Del Toro's part inspired the physical appearance of the saggy-skinned Pale Man. Email Address. Real Quick.

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro returns to the phantasmagorical cinema that defined such early fare as Cronos and The Devil's Backbone with this haunting fantasy-drama set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and detailing the strange journeys of an imaginative young girl who may be the mythical princess of an underground kingdom.
Her mother, Carmen Ariadna Gil , recently remarried to sadistic army captain Vidal Sergi Lpez and soon to bear the cruel military man's child, shy young Ofelia Ivana Baquero is forced to entertain herself as her recently-formed family settles into their new home nestled deep in the Spanish countryside.
As Ofelia's bed-ridden mother lies immobilized in anticipation of her forthcoming child and her high-ranking stepfather remains determined to fulfill the orders of General Francisco Franco to crush a nearby guerilla uprising, the young girl soon ventures into an elaborate stone labyrinth presided over by the mythical faun Pan Doug Jones.
Convinced by Pan that she is the lost princess of legend and that in order to return to her underground home she must complete a trio of life-threatening tasks, Ofelia sets out to reclaim her kingdom and return to her grieving father as Vidal's housekeeper Mercedes Maribel Verd and doctor Alex Angulo plot secretly on the surface to keep the revolution alive.

Its visionary director Guillermero del Toro that really outdoes himself on this definitive masterpiece.
A classic movie in the fantasy genre and in movies in general. Del Toro has reiterated many times that while a story can mean different things to different people, "objectively, the way I structured it, there are clues that tell you In del Toro's first conception of the story, it was about a married pregnant woman who meets the Faun in the labyrinth, falls in love with him, and lets him sacrifice her baby on faith that she, the baby, and the Faun will all be together in the afterlife and the labyrinth will thrive again.
Del Toro points out in the DVD commentary that scenes with Ofelia tend to have circles and curves and use warm colors, while scenes with Vidal and the war have more straight lines and use cold colors.
Over the course of the film, the two opposites gradually intrude on one another. Del Toro and a friend were once in a fight during which his friend was beaten in the face with a bottle, and the detail that stuck in the director's memory was that the bottle didn't break.
That scene is also based on a real occurrence in Spain, when a fascist smashed a citizen's face with the butt of a pistol and took his groceries, all because the man didn't take off his hat.
The Indiana-born actor, best known for working under heavy prosthetics and makeup, had worked with del Toro on Hellboy and Mimic and was the director's first choice to play the Faun and the Pale Man.
The only problem: Jones didn't speak Spanish. Del Toro said they could dub his voice, but Jones wanted to give a full performance.
Then del Toro said he could learn his Spanish lines phonetically, but Jones thought that would be harder to memorize than the actual words.
Fortunately, he had five hours in the makeup chair every day, giving him plenty of time to practice.
And then? Turns out it still wasn't good enough. Del Toro replaced Jones's voice with that of a Spanish theater actor, who was able to make his delivery match Jones's facial expressions and lip movements.
The faun is a mythological creature, half man and half goat, who represents nature it's where the word "fauna" comes from and is neutral toward humans.
Pan is a specific Greek god, also goat-like, who's generally depicted as mischievous, harmful, and overly sexual—not a creature you'd be comfortable seeing earn the trust of a little girl.
After being disappointed by the way the translators handled The Devil's Backbone "subtitles for the thinking impaired" , the Mexican filmmaker, who speaks fluent English, did the job himself for Pan's Labyrinth.

Bands of anti-Franco fighters hide in the forest, encouraged by news of the Normandy landings and other setbacks for Franco's friends Hitler and Mussolini.
A troop of Franco's soldiers is sent to the remote district to hunt down the rebels, and is led by Capitan Vidal Sergi Lopez , a sadist under cover as a rigid military man.
Commandeering a gloomy old mill as his headquarters, he moves in his new wife, Carmen Ariadna Gil , who is very pregnant, and her daughter from her first marriage, Ofelia Ivana Baquero.
The girl hates her stepfather, who indeed values Carmen only for breeding purposes. Soon after arriving, Vidal shoots dead two farmers whose rifles, they claim, are only for hunting rabbits.
After they die, Vidal finds rabbits in their pouches. He orders Mercedes Maribel Verdu , his chief servant, to cook the rabbits for dinner: "Maybe a stew.
Ofelia encounters a strange insect looking like a praying mantis. It shudders in and out of frame, and we're reminded of Del Toro 's affection for odd little creatures as in " Cronos ," with its deep-biting immortality bug.
The insect, friendly and insistent, seems to her like a fairy, and when she says so, the bug becomes a vibrating little man who leads her into a labyrinth and thus to her first fearsome meeting with the faun Doug Jones , who specializes in acting inside bizarre costumes.
Some viewers have confused the faun with Pan, but there is no Pan in the picture and the international title translates as "Labyrinth of the Faun.
The faun seems to be both good and evil; what are we to make of a huge pile of used shoes, especially worrisome in the time of the Holocaust?
But what he actually offers is not good or evil, but the choice between them, and Del Toro says in a commentary that Ofelia is "a girl who needs to disobey anything except her own soul.
The faun fits neatly into Ofelia's worries about her pregnant mother; he gives her a mandrake root to hide under the mother's bed and feed with two drops of blood daily.
The mandrake root is said to resemble a penis, but this one, in special effects that are beyond creepy, looks like a half-baby made from wood, leaves and earth.
The film is visually stunning. The creatures do not look like movie creations but like nightmares especially the Pale Man, with eyes in the palms of his hands.
The baroque organic look of the faun's lair is unlike any place I have seen in the movies. When the giant frog delivers up a crucial key in its stomach, it does so by regurgitating its entire body, leaving an empty frog skin behind.
Meanwhile, Vidal plays records on his phonograph, smokes, drinks, shaves as if tempting himself to slash his throat, speaks harshly to his wife, threatens the doctor and shoots people.
Del Toro moves between many of these scenes with a moving foreground wipe -- an area of darkness, or a wall or a tree that wipes out the military and wipes in the labyrinth, or vice versa.
This technique insists that his two worlds are not intercut, but live in edges of the same frame.
He portrays most of the mill interiors in a cold blue-grey slate, but introduces life tones into the faces of characters we favor, and into the fantasy world.
It is no coincidence that the bombs of the rebels introduce red and yellow explosions into the monotone world they attack.
Guillermo del Toro born is the most challenging of directors in the fantasy field because he invents from scratch, or adapts into his own vision.
He has made six features since his debut at 29 with "Cronos" , and I have admired, even loved, all of them, even those like " Hellboy ," " Mimic " and " Blade II " that did not receive the universal acclaim of "Cronos" and " The Devil's Backbone " a ghost story also set in Franco's Spain.
He is above all a visually-oriented director, and when he says "films are made of looks," I think he is referring not only to the gazes of his actors but to his own.
Born in Mexico, he has worked there and overseas, like his gifted friends and contemporaries Alfonso Cuaron born and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu born Isn't it time to start talking about a New Mexican Cinema, not always filmed in Mexico but always informed by the imagination and spirit of the nation?
Some of these are in one way or another genre films, but there is so much impact and intensity, and such a richness of visual imagination, that they flatter their genres instead of depending on them.
The three directors trade actors and technicians, support each other, make new rules, are successful without compromise. Cuaron's "Great Expectations," set in a Spanish-moss-dripping modern Florida and starring Ethan Hawke , Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Bancroft in guess which roles , is a stunning reworking of Dickens and illustrates how all three of these directors can put hands on a project and make it their own.
What makes Del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" so powerful, I think, is that it brings together two kinds of material, obviously not compatible, and insists on playing true to both, right to the end.
Ivana Baquero is excellent as the main character Ofelia, her performance is very mature and believable and she shares some beautiful scenes with her mother and Mercedes.
When the fairy tale elements return, it's astounding how naturally they fit into the story. I think that is the real magic of this film.
The war drama and the fairy tale stem so naturally from each other. One thing that most reviews haven't mentioned is the violence.
I think it's been firmly established that this is an adult's fairytale, but at times it is a very intense and brutal film.
There are a couple of scenes in particular which are very disturbing and difficult to watch. These do not distract from the tone and theme of the film however so they don't seem exploitative at all.
If you are squeamish, it may get a bit much for you. A final and obvious point I spose I can't get away without making: the set design, costumes and effects are superb.
That's all. I was perhaps expecting a little more fantasy, but the unique blend of genres is absolutely compelling.
There wasn't a false note anywhere or a plot hole, which are too often present in fantasy films. I can't recall a good, original fantasy film from recent years.
Fortunately this blows MirrorMask out of the water. It doesn't share any of the contrivances, vagueness or ineffectual characters with that film.
I just wish I'd seen it without already having read so much. I've tried very hard to not reveal any plot details at all as it does go to some surprising and unexpected places.
Fortunately most of the reviews have done the same. I'd urge anyone with the chance to see it to do so immediately, and try not to read too much more.
