Savigny and others convinced the King of Prussia , Friedrich Wilhelm IV , to allow the brothers to teach and conduct research at the University of Berlin.

In March , the brothers did just this and also continued to work on the German Dictionary. The Grimms believed that the most natural and pure forms of culture were linguistic and based in history.

Joseph Jacobs was in part inspired by his complaint that English children did not read English fairy tales; [9] in his own words, "What Perrault began, the Grimms completed".

Adolf Hitler praised them as folkish tales showing children with sound racial instincts seeking racially pure marriage partners, and so strongly that the Allies of World War II warned against them; [11] for instance, Cinderella with the heroine as racially pure, the stepmother as an alien, and the prince with an unspoiled instinct being able to distinguish.

The Grimm anthology has been a source of inspiration for artists and composers. Arthur Rackham , Walter Crane and Rie Cramer are among the artists who have created illustrations based on the stories.

But I really don't get it. Just use the English version of the words, since the rest of the book is in English. That's not really my biggest beef with this book, though.

In fact, that was a very minor problem. The biggest issue I had with this book is that it was a lame ending. That's not to say I wanted some huge car chase at the end with a myriad of explosions and gunfights.

Intellectual thrillers have endings that can be just as intense as those Hollywood-type endings. This was neither. There are a few murders, the cops try and figure them out, there are a few more murders, a cop comes up with the link pointing to the culprit, they go and arrest him at work, he comes along quietly, when they question him it's clear that he's crazy, they get their man.

The end. It was just so disappointing. And the whole final scene where they go to the murderer's old house looking for his mother?

Just lame. View all 4 comments. Apr 24, Nick Davies rated it liked it Shelves: This, especially when compared to the other Craig Russell novel s I have read, was a disappointment.

I very much enjoyed the author's Lennox series, set in Scotland, but won't be reading any more of this series set in Germany.

It wasn't massively problematic in as far as reading enjoyment was concerned, but it just felt 'too much' in several areas, which grated with me a little.

The setting made for a slightly colder and more distanced feel to the tale - almost Nordic crime in style - which prev This, especially when compared to the other Craig Russell novel s I have read, was a disappointment.

The setting made for a slightly colder and more distanced feel to the tale - almost Nordic crime in style - which prevented me completely understanding the characters.

Worst of all, however, was a convoluted plot based around folk tales and fairy stories which just lost my interest halfway through.

So few murderers in real life spend that much time and effort playing complicated artistic games with the police chasing them, and I hence found it all a bit ridiculous as well as a bit of a slog.

The clues came in a rather linear and contrived manner, and the ending was somewhat 'Scooby-Doo' in it's explanation too. So yes, though readable and entertaining, in my opinion a weaker effort by an author who I feel does better writing in the genre of Scottish noir.

Nov 03, Max rated it it was ok Shelves: thriller , badly-written. This book had so much going for it, it really did. The storyline was great, it was just written so badly it was difficult to read!

The major failing of this book was the constant referring to things in German, I don't speak German, so i'd just skim over the words.

Or I'd read them, and try to think of a word that was similar to it. Needless to say this made the story confusing!

Another thing that peeved me was the reference to the main character in the novel by his full police title in german Ugh.

Aug 20, Ally Rowe rated it liked it. Stories you know so well can still have mystery. Mar 21, Asaf Bartov rated it it was amazing. A few years ago, I had really enjoyed Russell's first Jan Fabel detective novel, Bloog Eagle, and I was hoping the second novel would not disappoint.

To my delight, this one is even better than the first! It has the same super-local feel of Hamburg Russell created in the first novel, delightful to someone who knows Hamburg even a little as I do, thanks to my friend Molly , weaving local and regional history and giving the scenes a very concrete feel.

The plot this time is superb, and masterfully A few years ago, I had really enjoyed Russell's first Jan Fabel detective novel, Bloog Eagle, and I was hoping the second novel would not disappoint.

The plot this time is superb, and masterfully crafted for suspense and surprise, without being cheesy. It has an intellectual premise, a firm mooring in actual philosophical ideas about Germanistics and ideas of Volk, and a good set of alternative suspects and side plots.

I enjoyed it thoroughly, and look forward to the next Jan Fabel book, which I shall probably read only in a few years, to keep with tradition.

Apr 09, Hannah rated it liked it. A fast paced thriller with twists and turns at every corner.

Absolutely fascinating.

But I also said at the time, "I'm sure the author is very good, he was highly recommended to me! And I shall read his other books", so now I'm reading "Wolfsfährte" English title "Brother Grimm" even though the idea of somebody using the Brother Grimm fairy-tales as a template for his serial murders is not exactly "appealing" to me, either.

I prefer "normal" murderers to obsessed psychopaths if you know what I mean — not saying that "normal" murderers aren't psychopaths, btw, but a "normal" murderer in my understanding being a person who commits a murder for a somehow "comprehensible", "accessible" "reason" — you can tell I'm trying to work something out here for myself I quite like "Wolfsfährte", actually, well, everything apart from the bits about the "Brother Grimm" and the psychopath committing these horrible crimes, lol!

Also, it's set in Hamburg which is a bonus lol View 1 comment. Apr 16, Willem van den Oever rated it liked it Shelves: thriller-mystery , in-english.

Introducing the body of the first victim in an unusual or interesting way in any mystery-novel, helps hook the reader.

But to keep this theme running and the reader hooked for the next couple of hundred pages, seems to be one of the hardest tasks for any crime-writer.

Brother Grimm, as the madman is referred to in the end, has a fairytale theme running through his rampages, dressing up his victims in manners associated to Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel.

Sep 21, Victoria rated it it was amazing Shelves: serial-killer , books-in-a-series , fairy-tales , mystery-thriller.

What an amazingly strong sequel!! I think I enjoyed this follow-up more even than the first book in the series, Blood Eagle.

This may, in part, be due to my own love of fairy tales. I am really looking forward to continuing on with the series. Russell clearly has a gift for plot, and his characters all come to life quite nicely.

They have all developed over the course of these first two books in the series, and I am quite curious to see where they will go from here.

Still, the focus of these books is most certainly their plots, and the originality and creativity that Russell offers up is fascinating and makes for a very enjoyable read.

Aug 19, Danelle rated it it was amazing. This is a chilling book that I only found because I was looking for things on fairytales for class.

Turns out the way the character Jan Fabel describes the fairytales in relation to the german language helped me understand what I wanted from my homework assignment.

This is a really good book with lots of interesting plot twist, leaving you not sure how to feel in some cases. Though I must say I did see the last little bit coming but that was only because I'd been studying fairytales and have been immersed in them since forever.

This is a brilliant read that I would recommend to anyone who shows interest in crime mysteries, Germany and of course fairytales.

Great book. I devoured it. A series of murders based on Grimms fairytales. Detective Fabel must put the clues together as he tries to bring his team back together from the injuries they suffered in Book 1.

As i A girl's body lies, posed, on the pale sand of a Hamburg beach, a message concealed in her hand. Starts off very bleakly with the murder of a child.

And ends with one of the most grisly murders I've read about in works of fiction. The book contains Some long German words, Which of course are essential to the books setting.

Does it measure up against Northern European detective stories? The author is British, But such is the German detail in the book if you didn't know you would never realise He grasps the whole German methodically concept, the only downside to that is maybe that organisation and efficiency can be too organized and to efficient?
